"We will export urea because we are a producer, and several countries have requested it. Three countries have requested it," said the minister during a visit to the Panaikang Bulog warehouse, accompanied by Bulog Deputy Director Marga Taufiq, in Makassar on Sunday. However, the minister did not reveal the countries involved as negotiations are still ongoing. He hopes the agreement will provide added value and optimal benefits for Indonesia. "It is still a negotiation, so our prices will be slightly better," Sulaiman said.
He further stated that the government has also secured fertilizer supplies since the beginning of the year through raw material purchases, to ensure availability. According to Sulaiman, this strategic step is part of President Prabowo Subianto's visionary policy for maintaining the resilience of the agricultural sector. He also emphasized that political tensions in the Middle East have not significantly impacted food prices in Indonesia because the national rice supply is secure. The national rice stock has reached 4.5 million tons, which is sufficient for the next 11 months.
Previously, PT Pupuk Indonesia President Director Rahmad Pribadi stated that urea fertilizer exports will continue as long as domestic demand is met. "The important thing is that Indonesia is secure first, then we can export," Pribadi said after a working meeting with Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta on Thursday, April 2. Under current conditions, Indonesia is still able to export urea fertilizer to help meet the needs of neighboring countries experiencing supply constraints.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to conflict in the region has caused many countries to experience obstacles in purchasing several commodities such as oil and fertilizer. Pribadi mentioned that Indonesia's urea fertilizer export destinations have previously included Australia, India, and the Philippines. He also stated that the national urea fertilizer production capacity has reached 8.8 million tons operationally while the installed capacity could reach 9.4 million tons.
Despite a sharp increase in global urea prices from around US$400 to US$800 per ton, Indonesia remains secure due to domestic production. Regarding the export quota, Pupuk Indonesia stated that the amount is around 1.5 million tons but distribution remains flexible depending on domestic supply.
